Women in Gaming: On the Cusp of Change
With the gaming industry being a male-dominated industry, it is great seeing so many women getting involved. With the number of women in the industry growing, women make up about 40% of all gamers worldwide. This number is increasing as more women are becoming involved in some way or another. Nowadays you will see women involved in anything from development to streaming to esports.
Even with the presence of women in the gaming industry women still face several challenges. one of the biggest being sexism, women gaming online often face abuse and harassment. Despite these challenges there are a few women who are breaking the stereotypes. Some of these women are:
- Lisa Su: Taiwanese-born American business executive and electrical engineer, who is the president, chief executive officer and chair of AMD.
- Gail Simone: Comic book writer who has written for titles like Wonder Woman and Batgirl. She is known for her strong female characters, and she has helped to change the way that women are portrayed in comic books.
- Jess Cliffe: Co-founder of Valve Corporation. She has helped shape the way games are designed and developed.
- Siobhan Reddy: the brains behind the game development company, Media Molecule, which brought us Little Big Planet.
- Amy Henning: writer and director of the Uncharted series and the Legacy of Kain video games.
- Bonnie Ross: founder of 343 Industries, a division of Microsoft studios that manages the Halo franchise. This lead to the expansion of Halo into a global entertainment phenomenon.
- Kim Swift: a game designer and leader of the team that made Portal. She has also worked on Left 4 Dead and Half-Life 2: Episode 2.
- Jade Raymond: produced Assassins Creed and Assassins Creed II.
- Kiki Wolfkill: worked with Bonnie Ross ay 343 Industries on the Halo franchise. Also worked on the Fable series.
- Kate Gorman: the youngest director of product for Zynga, she then started her own company Fort Mason Games.
- Jennifer Hale: a voice actress best known for work in franchises such as Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid and Overwatch. In 2013, she was recognized by Guinness World Records as the most prolific video game voice actress.
These are just a few of the many women who are making waves in the gaming industry. As more women are becoming involved in the industry this will hopefully change the way women are treated and promote gender equality.
In addition to the challenges mentioned above, women in the gaming industry also face other issues, such as lack of representation in games, gender-based discrimination, toxic gaming culture by other players.
Despite these challenges, there are several things that can be done to make the gaming industry more inclusive for women. These include creating more games with strong female characters, encouraging more women to get involved in the gaming industry by providing more opportunities for women to learn about game development and to network with other women in the industry and by supporting organizations that are working to make the gaming community more inclusive.
The gaming industry is changing, and women are playing an increasingly significant role. By addressing the challenges that women face in the gaming industry, we can create a more inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.
